Reimagined displays showcasing...

Bringing Music, and the NMM, to Life

Reinventing the Experience

Since our founding in 1973, the NMM has worked hard to craft a superb collection of some of the finest, humblest, most unique and culturally significant musical instruments on the planet.

Now, as we embrace our 50th anniversary, we are working hard to design new exhibitions, events, and programming that will be as thrilling, unique, and unforgettable as our collections. Covering the breadth of the places music and musical instruments have occupied through human history, we will take you on a journey through our musical past, present, and future.

With 12 entirely redesigned and rebuilt gallery spaces to be installed in our historic Carnegie Wing, the NMM will showcase musical instruments as seen, used, heard, and explored by peoples across cultures, continents, civilizations and eras. As of August 2023, the entire first floor - featuring seven brand new galleries of permanent exhibitions - is full open!

Explore the photos and renderings below for a small taste of what's in store as we prepare to spring back to life and whisk you away through the magical world of musical instruments.
